چکیده

This study compares a single-moment microphysics scheme to a double-moment microphysics scheme using four observed cases of a mesoscale cloud system. Previous studies comparing a single-moment microphysics scheme to a doublemoment microphysics scheme have focused on microphysical processes or overall dynamics, precipitation and morphology of cloud systems. However, they have not focused on how the different representation of microphysical processes between a singleand double-moment microphysics scheme affects precipitation. This study shifts its focus from that of previous studies to the effect of the different representation of microphysics on precipitation. In addition, this study examines the effect of the different representation of microphysical processes on different radiation budgets between singleand double-moment microphysics schemes. The temporal evolution of precipitation simulated by a single-moment microphysics scheme is significantly different from that by a double-moment microphysics scheme in this study. This is mostly due to different physical representations of key processes (i.e., autoconversion, saturation, and nucleation). Also, a simulation by a single-moment microphysics scheme results in different radiation budgets compared to a double-moment microphysics scheme. More reflection of incident solar radiation in a simulation with a double-moment microphysics scheme than that with a single-moment microphysics scheme is simulated.

Incorporating diagnosed intercept parameters and the graupel category within the ARPS cloud analysis system for the initialization of double-moment microphysics: Testing with a squall line over south China

In this study, a new set of reflectivity equations is introduced into the ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) cloud analysis system. This set of equations incorporates double moment microphysics information in the analysis by adopting a set of diagnostic relationships between the intercept parameters and the corresponding mass mixing ratios. A reflectivityand temperature-based graupel cl...

Make It a Double? Sobering Results from Simulations Using Single-Moment Microphysics Schemes

Single-moment microphysics schemes have long enjoyed popularity for their simplicity and efficiency. However, in this article it is argued through theoretical considerations, idealized thunderstorm simulations, and radiative–convective equilibrium (RCE) simulations that the assumptions inherent in these parameterizations can induce large errors in the proper representation of clouds and their f...

Impacts of a-priori databases using six WRF microphysics schemes on passive microwave rainfall retrievals

Physically based rainfall retrievals from passive microwave sensors often make use of cloud-resolving models (CRMs) to build a priori databases of potential rain structures. EachCRM, however, has its own cloud microphysics assumptions. Hence, approximated microphysics may cause uncertainties in the a priori information resulting in inaccurate rainfall estimates. This study first builds a priori...

Evaluating the Performance of Planetary Boundary Layer and Cloud Microphysical Parameterization Schemes in Convection-Permitting Ensemble Forecasts using Synthetic GOES-13 Satellite Observations

In this study, the ability of several cloud microphysical and planetary boundary layer parameterization schemes to accurately simulate cloud characteristics within 4-kmgrid-spacing ensemble forecasts over the contiguous U.S. was evaluated through comparison of synthetic GOES infrared brightness temperatures with observations. Four double-moment microphysics schemes and five planetary boundary l...
